Welcome to Biology at Uppsala University
Biology is a scientific discipline of fundamental importance to our understanding of life and nature, and is the basis for a range of issues of central importance to humans, spanning from securing a sustainable environment, to the development of drugs.
The biology section of Uppsala University includes world leading research and PhD student programs. The education of bachelor and master students is at the European top level. The research and PhD programs are organized into research programs, covering a wide range of fields and located in departments at the Biomedical Centre (BMC), a facility shared with departments from the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy, and at the Evolutionary Biology Centre (EBC), which also hosts the Museum of Evolution and a dedicated department of Biological Education. The broad coverage of biological sub-disciplines creates an exciting potential for interdisciplinary research, and enables us to offer advanced courses in many fields. The biology departments provide a dynamic environment with a highly international community of students, postdocs and faculty.
Building on the tradition of Linnaeus, biology at Uppsala University continues to contribute strongly to research and teaching, as indicated by excellent evaluations of education and a high success for competitive research funding.
Biology Education Centre
Biology Education Centre (IBG) coordinates all undergraduate and graduate education within Biology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Uppsala University. We offer International Master Programmes and a large selection of advanced courses in English in addition to our Swedish courses and Programmes.
Cell- and molecular biology
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) is an international, multidisciplinary and distinguished biomolecular department. The department teaches a large number of undergraduate and Master courses for students specialising in Biology, Biotechnology and Biomolecular Engineering.
Research interests, ranging all the way from cell biology down to biophysics of single molecules, are divided into seven specialty programs: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. Several laboratories at ICM are also centers of excellence: Structural Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Protein Synthesis and Uppsala RNA Research Center.
Ecology and Genetics
Evolutionary ecology and genetics form the core of the research activities at the Department of Ecology and Genetics (IEG), and are studied in animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms. This includes a number of high-profile projects on the processes of natural and sexual selection, local adaptation, speciation, and molecular evolution. We also harbour a strong research initiative on processes affecting microbial diversity and ecosystem function.
Various fundamental and applied aspects of conservation biology, including effects of global climatic change, are also part of our collective research. Approaches used range from field experiments to large-scale genome analyses, in the latter case mainly using next-generation sequencing (NGS) approaches.
Organismal Biology
The research at the Department of Organismal Biology (IOB), has a developmental and evolutionary theme including early vertebrate evolution, plant development and innate immune reactions in invertebrates and the phylogeny of these processes. The deepest branches in the tree of life are search for using bioinformatics and experimental molecular techniques.
Genomic analyses are used to understand evolutionary processes in microorganisms and eukaryotes. Research about how chemicals of anthropogenic origin interact with cellular functions and give rise to long-lasting adverse health effects in humans and wildlife is also performed. The department harbours the SciLifeLab zebra fish platform, and a Drosophila facility.
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Garden is one of Uppsala's most popular destinations. Here, you can enjoy the grandiose Baroque Garden, visit the 200 year old Orangery with its beautiful grand halls or find inspiration for home gardening among rockery plants, vegetables, summer plants and in the systemic quarters of woody plants. The Tropical Greenhouse is home to Uppsala's only rainforest!
Swedish Biodiversity Centre
The Swedish Biodiversity Centre (CBM) is Sweden's national centre for promoting sustainable use of biodiversity. The centre's main function is to conduct, initiate and coordinate research on the preservation, sustainable use and restoration of biodiversity in Sweden.
CBM was formed in 1995 as a result of Sweden ratifying UN:s Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). CBM could be thought of as a task-force to implement CBD in Sweden.
CBM is a joint venture between Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU, and is located on Ultuna campus south of Uppsala centre.
